Die diesjährige Ausgabe von VIDEONALE.scope präsentiert eine Auswahl experimenteller Filme sowie Talks und Performances, die um den Begriff der politischen Landschaft kreisen. Sie erproben Formen der Darstellung, in denen Landschaft nicht als passiver Gegenstand ästhetischer Betrachtung oder Überhöhung erscheint, sondern als Sensor gesellschaftspolitischer Veränderungen und belebter, umstrittener Raum in der Zeit.
Seit ihrer Erfindung als künstlerisches Genre diente Landschaft als Medium, durch das Räume nicht nur abgebildet, sondern ideologisch angeeignet werden konnten. Landschaft sollte nicht nur ein ästhetisch verdichtetes Bild von Natur zeigen, sondern einen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Status quo als Natur projizieren und befestigen: als zeitlosen, umhegten Raum der friedlichen Koexistenz, einen fiktionalen Garten, in dem die Spuren des „Fortschritts", der oft gewaltsamen Prozesse der Staatenbildung, Industrialisierung und Kolonisierung, ausgeblendet wurden. Auch der Film hatte, mit seinen spezifischen darstellerischen Möglichkeiten, hieran seinen Anteil.
In jüngerer Zeit haben es Filmemacher*innen nicht nur unternommen, diese Spuren offenzulegen und die politischen und ökonomischen Kräfte zu benennen, in deren Interesse ihre Naturalisierung betrieben wurde, sondern auch neue Strategien entwickelt, um Landschaften anders, bzw. andere Arten von Landschaft, darzustellen: als Feld der Begegnung, des Widerstreits und der Zusammenarbeit zwischen einer Vielzahl von Akteur*innen, die gegen die vereinheitlichenden, naturalisierenden Mythen anarbeiten.
Die Programme umfassen Filme aus fünf Jahrzehnten, die frühere Bemühungen um eine technologische „Aufrüstung" der natürlichen Welt auf ihre zerstörerische Wirkung, aber auch auf ihr utopisches Potential für die Gegenwart hin befragen. Sie untersuchen die Langzeitfolgen von Ressourcengewinnung und Kolonisierung und verbinden sie mit dem Kampf um indigene Landrechte und Repräsentation. Andere wiederum intervenieren spielerisch in den symbolischen Kosmos von Fortschritt und Prosperität, wie ihn insbesondere die moderne Stadt repräsentierte, oder nehmen das unbewusste Gendering urbaner und ländlicher Räume kritisch in den Blick. Damit machen sie jene Kräfte sicht- und hörbar, von denen in der Erzählung von den Gärten des Fortschritts keine Rede war.

On the basis of maps of former uranium mining areas in Saxony and Thuringia, Mareike Bernien and Alex Gerbaulet explore the history of the continued radiance of such landscapes. By way of various depth probes through time and space, they trace the sedimentented material, geopolitical, and metaphorical narratives surrounding uranium and its decay chain. Their work also examines the connections between radioactivity and image production.
